Challenges of Urdu Translations

Urdu isn’t an exception to translation challenges. It has its own and therefore demands a strong professional translators’ team that understands every little aspect of the language to produce a culturally, technically and grammatically correct piece of translation. So, here are some of the challenges involved in Urdu translations.

1. The Existing Differences of the Evolution of the Language

The way of speaking of Urdu differs from region to region. For instance, people from Lucknow speak Urdu differently, while those from other regions like Telangana or Punjab talk in a different fashion. Although this doesn’t come in as a challenge in written translations, it is certainly one while working out translations for video and audio scripts. Someone not sounding native while voicing out the translated content may let all the hard work go down the drain, as the audience will never be able to resonate with it, thus, practically creating a very little or no impact.

2. Multiple Synonyms for a Single Word

This comes in as a challenge while dealing with English to Urdu translations. A lot of English words have at least two Urdu words. For instance, the word different in English can be used in various ways based on the context involved. In some places, the word mukhtalif can be used, while at some other, the word juda may be written. Of course, the translator must be sure of using these synonyms at appropriate places.

3. The Style of Writing

Unlike almost all the other languages of the world, Urdu is written from right to left. A translator working on Urdu translations must be well aware of these aspects.

4. The Order of the Words

While English uses the subject-verb-object, Urdu is a relatively flexible language, and therefore, the same sentence can be written in various forms, and varying orders, without changing the original meaning of the sentence. This can be a challenge for native English speakers as they are used to the fixed subject-verb-object order of the sentence. The flexibility may confusion to a varying extent.

5. Urdu Dialects

Urdu doesn’t have a lot of dialects. But, even then the few ones may also pose a challenge while translating English text to Urdu. Some of Urdu’s dialects include Rekhta, Dakhni, the modern vernacular Urdu. Dakhni is a blend of words from various languages including Marathi, Arabic, Konkani, Chagatai, Persian, which aren’t a part of the standard form of Urdu. It is widely spoken and understood in many parts of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Telangana. Of course, besides the linguistic challenges, the approach too will differ. The translator must be aware of these differences.
