Scope of Dutch Translations
Spoken by a relatively lesser number of people across the world, somewhere around 44-45 million altogether, the geographical expanse of Dutch is quite large. In fact huge, we’d say. Besides the Netherlands, and some regions of its neighboring countries, wherein it is spoken in the dialect form, Dutch is spoken in South America, and in some countries in the Caribbean. So, even if the number of Dutch speakers across the globe may not impress you, you might want to look positively at the different geographies that speak it. Nevertheless, 40 million as well isn’t at all a low figure, for someone who’s positively looking at expanding in the Dutch-speaking regions!
Now, that’s with the language numbers and the region. Let us take a look at the scope of Dutch translations from the viewpoint of the country’s economy. Netherlands is one of the largest economies of the world – 18th largest to be precise, according to reports from the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank. With roughly around 17 million people residing in the country and with an impressive GDP per capita of over 48,000 USD, the country is considered to be one of the richest in the world.
Netherland’s economy is largely dependent on a few industries that have been dominating the country’s economy for a very long time. Some of prominent industries in the country are agriculture and livestock, energy, the chemical industry, metallurgy, and tourism. Speaking of energy, the Netherlands is home to around 25% of the natural gas reserves in the European Union! When it comes to tourism, for years, the country has remained a hotspot for tourists all over the world, and in fact, it continues to be one even today.
The Netherlands is considered to be a great country for foreign investments. The country enjoys a strategically good location, enjoys the working of a stable and effective government, and also has a beneficial tax system. Besides, the fair and transparent legal system in the country encourages foreign investors to invest in the country, establish operations in this small, but one of the richest countries in the world.
Dutch Translation Challenges
Challenges are inevitable when it comes to translations, and therefore, you require an expert pool of translators that understands every little aspect of the language and has the ability to apply the differences to ensure that the translation is accurate, and relevant in the context of the local market that one is targeting. The Dutch language too has its own set of challenges when it comes to translations. These differences are predominantly the ones arising out of grammar differences between a particular language pair that belongs to a different family of languages.
Of course, comparing Dutch grammar with that of every other language in the world isn’t practically possible, and therefore, we’d limit ourselves to differences between Dutch and English. The good news is that English and Dutch belong to the same family of languages, and therefore there isn’t much of a difference in the grammar of both these languages. Nevertheless, although not many and very small, there are differences, and which need to be known by the Dutch translators while working on English to Dutch translations.
1. Interrogative and Negative Sentences
Dutch and English follow similar tenses, however, with the difference of the non-usage of the auxiliary do in the negative or interrogative sentences. For instance, the English sentence I do not meat, in Dutch, would be said I eat not meat or the sentence, what do you do, would be said as what you do in Dutch. Apparently, this is a very small difference, but an important one.
2. Order of the Words
In Dutch, the order of the words remains the same as English (subject-verb-object), but with a change in the position of the adverbials. Here, Dutch resembles German with respect to the need of inverting the subject and verb, in case the sentence begins with an adverbial or another element. As in the case of German, Dutch tends to transport the verb to the end of the clause after the modal verbs, or in case it is a subordinate clause.
3. Definite and Indefinite Articles
The definite and indefinite articles in Dutch and English are the same, but with a difference. The English sentence my mother is a singer, in Dutch, would be said as my mother is singer. Of course, the latter may not grammatically make adequate sense in English, but that’s how it is in the Dutch language!
